WHAT'S BETTER THAN one scream queen? Three scream queens!
Tim Burton is back with a sequel to his 1988 horror-comedy, Beetlejuice, and he's brought some familiar faces along for the ride. In addition to Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and the iconic Catherine O'Hara-who starred in the original film as the titular character, Lydia Deetz, and Delia Deetz, respectively-the sequel will feature Scream and Wednesday actor, Jenna Ortega. A crop of new and returning faces will join them, too, but more on that below.
Burton has kept fans waiting nearly four decades for the follow-up to his cult classic film. Per EW, the director mulled over ideas like Beetlejuice and the Haunted Mansion andBeetlejuice Goes West before settling on this new story, which he simply titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Ahead, everything we know-and our first look at-the Beetlejuice sequel so far.
What is the Beetlejuice sequel about?
Burton has been coy about the plot of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice-however, we do know a few key details. The recently released teaser trailer indicates that the film will open with a death in the Deetz family, likely family patriarch Charles Deetz (originally played by Jeffrey Jones)-a detail Burton previously hinted at.
"There's something that happens that sets things in motion," he told EW, who asked whether that 'something' might be the death of Charles. "We'll see," he teased.
Aside from that, we know little else except that either Ryder or Ortaga's character summons Beetlejuice again and then, in Keaton's words: "The Juice is loose."
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cast
Several of the original film's stars have reprised their roles for the Beetlejuice sequel. In addition to Ryder and Keaton, Schitt's Creek and Home Alone star Catherine O'Hara is back as Delia Deetz.
As for the new faces: Of course, there is Ortega, who previously worked with Burton on Addams Family spin-off Wednesday. She will play the daughter of Ryder's and granddaughter of O'Hara's characters. Poor Things' Willem Dafoe is reportedly on board, playing some sort of policeman of the afterlife; as is Italian actor and model Monica Bellucci, who is said to be playing Beetlejuice's wife. Justin Theroux and House of the Dragon's Arthur Conti are also involved, but details about their characters are still murky.
Beetlejuice sequel release date
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will hit cinemas on September 6, 2024.
