From toy dolls to virtual lives.

MERE WEEKS AFTER she bid farewell to Barbie at the Oscars, actor and producer Margot Robbie has her eyes set on her next big project-but this time, she's drawing inspiration from the world of virtual toys.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, Robbie's production company LuckyChap has signed on to produce a live-action adaptation of popular computer game The Sims-which anyone who grew up in the 2000s would be more than familiar with.
Read on for everything we know thus far.
Is Margot Robbie making a film about The Sims?
Yes, Margot Robbie's production company LuckyChap-which she runs alongside husband Tom Ackerley, childhood friend Sophia Kerr and their former housemate, producer Josey McNamara-has signed on to produce a live-action film about The Sims. LuckyChap will produce along with Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, while Electronic Arts (EA) who created the game will also be involved in a creative and producing capacity.
LuckyChap has produced a number of critically-acclaimed and audience-adored films since its inception in 2014, starting with 2017's I, Tonya. They've also produced 2020's Birds of Prey, as well as Emerald Fennell's directorial debut Promising Young Woman and her disturbing 2023 followup Saltburn.
In 2016, LuckyChap signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros. to develop and produce films and television series. It was this deal that led them to partnering with Mattel Films to co-produce 2023's standout Barbie, in which Robbie starred as the iconic toy doll.
What will The Sims film be about?
It's too soon to say just what the film version of The Sims will be about, but naturally, following up from Barbie-a film created based on the concept of an internationally renowned doll-we're expecting a similarly fourth-wall-breaking concept.
For the unfamiliar, The Sims is a series of life simulation computer games published by EA which has sold nearly 200 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling video games ever. It was dreamt up by game designer Will Wright, who wanted to create a "virtual doll house" after he lost his home in a tragic 1991 firestorm.
The first game in the series, called The Sims, was released in 2000, and was followed by The Sims 2 in 2004, The Sims 3 in 2009, and The Sims 4 in 2014-with a number of expansion pack games released in between. In the game, users can create Sims (virtual avatars) and adjust their appearance and personality traits, then allow them to interact with each other in cities and homes that can also be custom-built. Players can watch (and help) their Sims go through the mundane daily motions of life-from cooking and cleaning to going to work and making friends.
Who will be in The Sims film?
It's definitely too soon to say which stars might be involved in bringing the world of The Sims to life (though we're quietly hoping Katy Perry makes a cameo and re-records her iconic 'Simlish' version of her song "Last Friday Night").
We do know, however, that director Kate Herron is attached to the project. Herron directed the first season of Marvel's Loki series starring Tom Hiddleston, as well as four episodes of the first season of Sex Education-so we know she's capable of tackling the genre-bending concept of the film as well as plenty of humour and heart.
More to come.
