SNL star apologises to Sharon Stone decades after 'offensive' sketch
Sharon Stone has reflected on her stint hosting Saturday Night Live, as Dana Carvey apologized for one very controversial skit.
The Sliver actress took over presenting duties for the popular program in 1992, shortly after her blockbuster film, Basic Instinct, hit the big screen.
During a very chaotic episode, in which the stage was stormed as the 66-year-old performed her opening monologue, she took part in the Airport Security sketch alongside Dana.
In the eyebrow-raising segment, he played an Indian security guard who along with other male officers – was tasked with leading the star through various measures.
They instructed her to remove her clothing one item at a time, to ensure she didn't have anything dangerous on her person.
During an appearance on the Fly On The Wall podcast, hosts David Spade and Dana unpacked the footage, with the latter admitting they would be 'arrested' if they attempted something similar today.
'She was such a good sport,' he began the episode. 'The comedy we did in 1992 with Sharon Stone, we would be literally arrested now.'
Speaking directly to Sharon, he later said: 'I want to apologize publicly for the security check sketch where I played an Indian man and we're convincing Sharon, her character, or whatever, to take her clothes off to go through the security thing.
'It's so 1992. It's from another era.'
Laughing off his remarks, Sharon insisted: 'I know the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony, and I think that we were all committing misdemeanors because we didn't think there was something wrong then.
'We didn't have this sense. I had much bigger problems than that. That was funny to me, I didn't care. I was fine being the butt of the joke.
'I feel like now we're in such a weird and precious time because people have spent too much time alone. People don't know how to be funny and intimate or any of these things with each other.
'Everyone is so afraid and are putting up such barriers around everything that people can't be normal with each other anymore. It's lost all sense of reason.'
'When I was doing the Indian character there was no malice in it,' Dana clarified. 'It was really me rhythmically trying to get laughs. I just want to say that – watching it-comedy needs a straight person and you were perfect in it. You were completely sincere and you made us funny.'
However, there was more drama behind the scenes during Sharon's hosting debut as she was left fearing for her life before her opening monologue was complete.
Discussing her efforts, the Casino star detailed the moment she was on stage when 'a bunch of people' stormed the stage, threatening to kill her.
Opening up about the terrifying moment, she shared that SNL creator Lorne Michaels jumped up and started 'beating up' the attackers himself.
'I came out to do the monologue live, which is always super scary, and a bunch of people started storming the stage saying they were going to kill me during the opening monologue,' she continued.
'The security that's always in there froze because they'd never seen anything like that happen. They froze and Lorne started screaming, What are you doing? Watching the f**king show? And Lorne started beating them up and pulling them back from the stage. The stage manager looked at me and said, Hold for five.
'So all these people were getting beat up and handcuffed in front of me and we went live.'
'I was doing this live monologue while they were handcuffing and beating up people at my feet,' Sharon added. 'If you think the monologue is scary to start with, try doing it as people are saying they're going to kill you and they're handcuffing them in front of you.
'They were mad because it was the beginning of my work as an AIDS activist. Nobody understood at that time what was really happening.
'I honestly blacked out for half of the show.'
