In the Victorian era, it was common for married men and women to have separate rooms from each other because doctors of the time warned against spreading germs to your partner when you slept in close proximity of them. By the time the 1950s rolled around, this was no longer the case. In fact, sleeping in a separate bedroom soon became the telltale sign of a poor marriage. But today, one in five couples sleep in separate rooms - some because they have different sleeping patterns, don't want to disturb their partners, or simply because they like their space.
