Marvel 1943 game story trailer looks pre-rendered but it's not
The new WWII era Marvel game, from the creator of Uncharted, has got its first proper trailer and it's aiming for a 2025 launch.
Despite EA saying they no longer want to make licensed games, they've still got at least two Star Wars titles and two Marvel games to release first. The latter are based on Iron Man and Black Panther but there is another game, due out next year, that also features Wakanda's guardian.
Although it wasn't named until today, Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra was announced back in 2022 and has a Second World War setting. That's fine for Steve Rogers but it means that Black Panther is not T'Challa, but instead his grandfather Azzuri.
The new story trailer below looks pre-rendered, but supposedly it's all real gameplay footage running in Unreal Engine 5, which is very impressive if true and implies an awful lot of money has been spent on it.
Rather than EA, or any of the other big publishers, the game is being handled by Skydance New Media, whose co-president is Uncharted creator Amy Hennig – who worked on the first three games, before leaving Naughty Dog.
Although it's a nice trailer it doesn't really tell you much more than was obvious from the original teaser, with brief glimpses at Howling Commandos soldier Gabriel Jones and Wakandan spy Nanali.
In the comics, the Howling Commandos are comprised of several different characters, including Sergeant Nick Fury, but there's no sign of him or the others and the trailer blurb does specifically refer to 'an ensemble of four heroes'.
Although that sounds like it's setting itself up for a multiplayer game, Skydance have insisted that's not the case and that this is purely a single-player game with multiple characters.
As the subtitle implies, the main villains are Hydra, rather than real-world Nazis, and that presumably means that Red Skull is going to be the big bad – although there doesn't seem to be any sign of him yet.
There's no indication of when in 2025 the game might be released but regardless of when exactly it arrives, you'd certainly expect to hear more about it this year, perhaps during one of the big not-E3 events during the summer.
