Ewan McGregor has said it was 'necessary' to still have an intimacy coordinator for sex scenes with his real-life wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead on the set of their latest project.

The couple appear together in TV miniseries A Gentleman in Moscow, about Russian aristocrat Count Alexander Rostov (McGregor), who is spared from death and placed under house arrest while the Bolshevik Revolution plays out before him.

Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Amor Towles, Winstead co-stars as Anna Urbanova, a Soviet film star at the height of her fame who embarks on a romance with Rostov in a role that's expanded on from the source material.

Using her wit and beauty to dazzle the count, their chemistry is described as 'clear from the start' when they meet in the hotel.

However, despite Star Wars actor McGregor, 52, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star Winstead, 39, tying the knot in 2022 after meeting while making Fargo in 2017, the husband and wife still opted to use an intimacy coordinator for their sex scenes.

As McGregor explained, it was largely for the sake of the TV show's crew as well as the fact the newly popular role is a welcome addition to the industry in his eyes.

'It's still necessary, because it's also about the crew, and it's odd to be naked in front of people, it's odd to be intimate in front of the camera,' he told the Radio Times.

'If you were doing a dance scene, you'd have a choreographer. It's an important part of the work now, because it's somebody that the director and actors meet in the middle.'

McGregor was previously married to Eve Mavrakis from 1995 until 2020, with whom he shares four daughters: Clara, 28, and Esther, 23, and Jamyan, 22, and 13-year-old Anouk, who were both adopted.

Now Clara and Esther are following in his footsteps too Clara co-stars with her dad in upcoming drama Bleeding Love the Trainspotting star is even more pleased to have intimacy experts working on set.

'My daughter [Esther] is 22. If an older, famous director goes to a 22-year-old and says, I want you to be naked in this scene, that actress might feel, Oh, my God, I've got to do it, my career might depend on it. And then five years after that, she could look back and go, I wish I hadn't. Why am I naked in that scene? It's unnecessary,' he explained.

'Now there's somebody she talks to whose career doesn't rest on the shoulders of this person.'

It's easy for many fans to assume that an intimacy coordinator is simply there to choreograph a sex scene, but their role is more over-arching and involved than that.

They also work on birth scenes and material involving abuse, as well as safeguarding all cast and crew involved in the shooting of such scenes; the job actually spans the entire length of production and beyond too including when a film or TV show is released to the public.

'It's as important how we continue that support when the production goes out into the world and [generates] a response from an audience,' Ita O'Brien told Metro.co.uk recently.

O'Brien is an established intimacy director who has worked on productions including Normal People, I May Destroy You and recent BBC Viagra drama Men Up.

This includes keeping the work on set confidential unless otherwise agreed upon by the actors involved themselves, with new rules recently introduced by US actors' guild Sag-Aftra to ensure this.

'We're part of that ongoing support in really making sure that a cast member is [helped] and [overseeing] how the intimate content is spoken about and most importantly that it is absolutely still following that intention to be confidential, to honour the production, honour how it's spoken about and what is spoken about.'

McGregor and Winstead also share a young son, Laurie, together and were married in a 'small' ceremony in 2022.

A Gentleman in Moscow streams exclusively on Paramount Plus from Friday, March 29.
