Greg Rutherford has opened up about his 'horribly painful' Dancing on Ice injury, which forced him to drop out of the final.

The former Olympian withdrew from the event on Sunday – which saw Ryan Thomas crowned champion – on the morning of the spectacle after he suffered an injury in rehearsals.

He's now revealed how gruesome it truly was, and said he 'effectively gave [himself] a C-section' when he attempted to leap through the legs of pro ice-skaters Brendyn Hatfield and Colin Grafton.

Speaking on his Instagram Story, the 37-year-old said: 'Today is surgery day. Loads of people have been asking, "What happened?"

'I've been a bit busy and obviously just recovering from the initial injury before I had the surgery that I hadn't got round to really talking about it.'

He went on: 'Long story short, I leapt through the legs of Brendyn and Colin and managed to tear all of my abs as well as herniate. So I effectively gave myself a C-section.

'So yes, it was horribly painful. It needs to be operated on today and then I'll be properly on the mend.'

'It was very painful, pretty horrible,' he added.

A couple of days after missing out on the final due to the injury, Greg admitted he was still feeling 'very sore and very tired' as he continued his recovery.

In an Instagram post, Greg said: 'Seen a specialist today, I've got some scans tomorrow, and then I will know more about what's going on, and what's happening.

'I'm very sore and very tired so I'm going to get an early night tonight. But again I cannot believe the amount of lovely messages I've had so thanks very much. I'll update everybody once I know what the next step is. This is grim.'

As he accepted the trophy, soap star Ryan went on to dedicate the win to Greg, saying: 'Listen Greg, if you're watching this at home, this trophy's for you mate.'

Following his big win, Ryan joked during an appearance on Lorraine how he wanted to hand over his trophy to the injured athlete.

Greg responded on his Instagram Stories, saying: 'Just a second walked in through the door after having a scan on my stomach and I've just seen what Ryan's been saying on Lorraine.'

'First and foremost Ryan, you should never have had imposter syndrome: you were the worthy winner of the show. You were incredible from day one. The King of Spin and just an amazing human to be around.'

'You can keep the trophy,' he laughed.

Dancing On Ice is available to watch on ITVX.
