A 12 year wait is about to end as Dragon's Dogma 2 prepares for launch, but when exactly will it be available and should you play the original first?

Capcom's sequel to 2012's action role-playing game Dragon's Dogma looks promising so far, partly because of an unfortunate leak that revealed hours of footage well before the game's release.

The director of Dragon's Dogma 2 hasn't addressed the leak but has been vocal leading up to launch day, eagerly explaining why the game doesn't have many fast travel options and why it will never support online multiplayer.

Fans are eager too, after such a long wait for a sequel, so here's everything you need to know about when it's out in the UK, what you get if you pre-order, and if you have to play the original game first.

Dragon's Dogma 2 release date and time

The official release date for Dragon's Dogma 2 is March 22, with everyone getting the game at the same time – relatively speaking.

That means the game goes live at 00:00 GMT for UK fans and at 01:00 CET in Europe. American fans can play it starting from 17:00 PDT on the West Coast and at 20:00 EDT on the East Coast.

So in this case living (or pretending to live) in New Zealand doesn't mean you get to play the game early.

Where can I play Dragon's Dogma 2?

Capcom is releasing its new role-player on Xbox X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC at launch.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is available to pre-order on all formats, and will be Capcom's first game priced at 69.99 on Xbox and PlayStation, and 53.98 on PC via Steam.

If you buy the pre-order, you will also receive a Superior Weapons Quartet – four weapons that will be available to you in the in-game storage when you start the game.

Are there special editions of Dragon's Dogma 2?

Yes! There's a Deluxe Edition available on all formats, which will set you back 79.99 on Xbox and PlayStation and 65.98 on PC.

The Deluxe Edition comes with the pre-order bonus of the Superior Weapons Quartet as well as the Ring Of Assurance.

Additionally, the Deluxe Edition includes:

  • 1,500 Rift Crystals to purchase pawns and items.
  • A special camping kit available for purchase at shops in-game.
  • A collection of sounds and music from the game.
  • A Wakestone to revive the dead.
  • Art Of Metamorphosis to change the appearance of your character or a pawn.
  • The key to the gaol.
  • Incense to change your pawns inclination.
  • A Harpysnare, which emits a scent enticing to harpies.
  • A pendant that can be gifted.

Do you have to play Dragon's Dogma 1 before 2?

The short answer is no, you don't have to play Dragon's Dogma before getting into the upcoming sequel.

The long answer, by the game's director Hideaki Itsuno, is also no, as he told GamesRadar that the main character has lost their memory, and the developers were able 'to have characters around you explain things to get you up to speed. So even if this is your first time playing Dragon's Dogma, you can safely dive in.'
